The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.
The one-time leader was convicted of planning a armed takeover in September and sentenced more than a 27-year term in jail, but he continued under confinement pending appeals.
Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after fresh information emerged.
This included attempting to break his tracking device and a call for a demonstration that could "allow for a potential flight.
Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks
In a paperwork permitting the custody, Justice Moraes said information from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his getaway".
This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the protest called by his offspring.
His offspring, Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a meeting of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.
His son wrote on digital networks on last Friday: Will you battle for your country, or observe everything from your phone there on your couch? I urge you to battle with us."
He said the gathering would be so supporters could "pray for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the judge's decision was the potential of his "relocation to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the probes revealed a background of arranging to seek refuge through a consular facility", a announcement said.
The judicial paperwork underscores that the United States embassy in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is positioned around 8 miles from his dwelling.
Worldwide Consequences
His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist American leader Trump, causing him to enact a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.
Bolsonaro is being detained in a Federal Police station in the capital and will have a custody hearing on the following day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under house arrest, with digital surveillance.
They also petitioned that he be permitted to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other health problems.
Details of Guilty Verdict
The former president was found guilty of leading a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plot which encompassed plans to assassinate his opponent and his running partner, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.
The plot was stopped because it failed to get the backing of the armed forces officials. Lula was inaugurated without issue on the first day of 2023.
But a following week, on 8 January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged public facilities in the capital, the capital city.
The security forces intervened and around 1,500 people were arrested.
The judges found that the protesters had been incited by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to step in, bring back stability and return him to office.
At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.
He was also barred from running for public office until 2060 - eight years after the completion of his term.
The former president called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the next presidential race.
