Roughly 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Vehicles, exterior walls and mailboxes were defaced, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they reported in a official communication.
Police say they were alerted late on Wednesday night, when a individual noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored substance.
The fluid had been placed in the pattern of a banned symbol, they reported.
Police then discovered many other marked automobiles and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Officials report initial examinations show the substance was most likely blood from a person.
"Currently there is no clue as to its origin; authorities are currently not cognizant of any harm in connection with the occurrence," they added.
Municipal representatives stated they were working "to resolve the incident" and have asked to the public for tips.
A senior representative commented the incident left him stunned and had to be resolved rapidly.
"This event strikes at the core of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the extremist terrorist attack five years ago," he wrote on a platform, mentioning the murder of nine individuals by a assailant aiming at people of immigrant origin in five years prior.
