Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.
The location, located using reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountains just above Palmyra in central Syria.
"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of access tunnels providing entry to the facility... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.
There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.
The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
The Islamic State group - referred to as Daesh - established militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This strike shows the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.
British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group after its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.
"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces participating in this mission for their skill and their bravery," Healey commented. "They were among numerous UK service members deployed over the festive period. This mission, to remove militants who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how British military are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and influential overseas."
In December, the United States armed forces carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.
The United Nations says Daesh still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
