The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
