Nepal's Political Landscape Sees Significant Partnership Formed By Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant casualties.

"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The September uprising was sparked by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the New Political Agreement

According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's established political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Political Discussions Underway

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with several leading political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a collective responsibility. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
